Proposal for Support

Melamchi Ghyang Secondary School

Helambu Rural Municipality–1, Melamchi Ghyang, Sindhupalchok, Nepal

Established: 1985 AD.

1. Introduction

Melamchi Ghyang Secondary School (MGSS), established in 1985, is located in the remote village of  Melamchi Ghyang in Helambu Rural Municipality–1, Sindhupalchok District, Nepal. For nearly four decades, the school has served as a vital educational institution for children from diverse indigenous communities, including the Hyolmo, Sherpa, and Tamang populations.

Despite its remoteness and limited resources, the school has continued to provide education from early grades through secondary level. A significant portion of teacher salaries nearly half has been supported by generous charities outside Nepal. This external support has played a crucial role in keeping the school operational and maintaining the quality of teaching.

To continue our mission and improve educational opportunities for rural children, we are seeking additional donors and partners for several key projects.

2. Current Challenges

Although the school is functioning, we face several pressing challenges:

Inadequate infrastructure due to the school’s remote Himalayan location.

Limited funding for teacher salaries, resulting in staff shortages and high turnover.

Lack of modern educational resources such as digital tools, science equipment, and library materials.

Vulnerability to harsh weather which affects classrooms, hostels, and sanitation facilities.

Difficulty supporting students from low-income families who often lack uniforms, stationery, or proper nutrition.

3. Our Vision

Our vision is to provide quality, inclusive, and modern education for children in one of Nepal’s most remote mountain regions. We aim to create a supportive learning environment where students can grow academically, socially, and culturally—while preserving their unique heritage.

4. Projects Requiring Donor Support

We warmly invite donors to support one or more of the following priority projects:

A. Teacher Salary Support Fund

To ensure consistent, high-quality teaching, we seek support to cover the remaining portion of teacher salaries.
